Abstract

Background: Primary dysmenorrhoea, characterized by painful menstruation without any underlying pelvic pathology, is a common gynaecological complaint among females, significantly affecting their quality of life. A non-pharmacological approach like exercise have been proposed for addressing dysmenorrhoea. This research investigates the effectiveness of aquatic core stabilization exercises in reducing primary dysmenorrhoea symptoms among female students age 19-25 years.

Methodology: A randomized controlled trial involved 60 female students with diagnosed primary dysmenorrhea, randomly allocated to the intervention group (n=30) and the control group (n=30). The intervention group participated in a 4-week aquatic exercise program focusing on core stabilization exercises, while the control group received no intervention.

Results: The study revealed a significant decrease in menstrual pain among participant in the aquatic exercise group with nearly 90% reporting a decrease in menstrual pain after the four-week programme.

Conclusion: The findings of this study suggested that aquatic core stabilization exercises can be effective in reducing the severity of primary dysmenorrhea in female students.  Structured aquatic exercise programs, can lead to a significant decrease in pain intensity associated with dysmenorrhea.
